Why indie bands are better

Posted by adam on Tue Apr 7 2009 7:56 p.m.

Thursday, April 2nd, I get this email:

Hello Iron & Wine Ticket Buyer, Thank you for purchasing tickets to Iron & Wine's upcoming May tour, we're very excited for these shows.

We wanted to let you know that all ticket holders will be receiving a free copy of Iron & Wine - Norfolk 6/20/05 live CD. The CD will be released on April 18, 2009 as part of Record Store Day (available exclusively at independent record stores) and we have secured enough copies of the disc to hand out each night on tour (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York).

Thanks for the support! See you in May!

Aside from a great product, what keeps you coming back for more is great customer service. I think this is one of the big reasons why indie bands are doing so well these days: they know how to treat their customers. Lots of the big label bands (you know who you are, Coldplay) only take the time to raise their ticket prices. One notable exception is Radiohead: they put together a killer discbox for In Rainbows that quality was only outmatched by the music it contained.

HAY! YOU HAVE TEH COMMENTS NOW!

I don't have anything to say about this post, but I'm really stoked about your newfound comments :)

Two comment feature requests:

  1. You should remember the stuff I entered last time. Feel free to set a cookie, since I don't feel like typing in my email address and domain every time I leave a comment.

  2. You have no checkbox called "Email me when other people comment on this post." Such checkboxes are pure awesome-sauce. So you should put one of those in. Bonus points if it actually does what it says.

Caveat: Thanks to the ninja-fu of 1Password, I don't actually type my contact info in every time. So if you have to pick which of the above features to implement, by all means pick the latter. I will get far more use out of it. And you'll get more comments from me!

For whatever that's worth.

In conclusion, I am a lazy bum. I don't feel like typing, and I don't feel like coming back to every post I've commented on just to check if you replied. Thanks for indulging my lazy!
